2008 NORTH
CAROLINA
ANGUS
ASSOCIATION
SPRING FEVER
SALE
Submitted
by:
Suzanne
Brewer -
Executive
Secretary,
North
Carolina
Angus
Association
Cattle began
arriving on
Thursday and
by early
Friday
morning they
were all
checked in
and
the wash
crew began
cleaning up
the cattle
in
preparation
for Friday
afternoon
viewing. Tom
Burke
arrived
later in the
day ready to
work and get
everything
in order for
the sale.
Friday
evening
activities
began with
supper on
the upper
floor
of the sale
barn. The
“flower
ladies” from
the Chinqua-Penn
Plantation
had done an
excellent
job of
decorating
for our
meeting.
They also
decorated
the ring for
sale day. We
appreciate
their
involvement
with our
sale.

After
supper our
speaker was
Bill Bowman
from the
American
Angus
Association.
Mr. Bowman
is Vice
President,
Information
and Date
Management
and director
of
Performance
Programs and
President of
the newly
formed Angus
Genetics,
Inc. He
encouraged
anyone who
is in the
area to stop
by the
Association
headquarters
in St.
Joseph
Missouri,
they love
having
visitors.
He spoke of
the history
of the
Association
and gave us
some
astonishing
statistics:
(1) in 2007
there were
over 347,000
registrations,
more than
the next ten
breeds
combined;
(2) in 2007
50.6% of
registrations
were from
A-I breeding
and 49.4%
from natural
service; (3)
in 2007 over
40,000 ET
calves were
registered,
11.5 % of
all
registrations.
Mr. Bowman
spoke on the
Angus Source
Program and
the changes
being made
in some of
the EPDs. He
touched on
the Regional
Directors, a
group of 13
field
representatives
across the
nation;
David Gazda
from Georgia
covers North
Carolina. He
mentioned
the Beef
Leadership
Institute,
which is a
program to
develop
leadership
among the 25
to 45 age
group and
provides
insight into
all segments
of the
cattle
industry.
In 2007
there were
over 584
million
pounds of
CAB beef and
a demand for
even more.
He talked
about other
areas of
American
Angus
including
Angus
Productions
and the
Angus
Foundation
which
provides
funding for
scholarships,
education
and
research.
The new AGI,
Inc. will
focus on
genetic
evaluation
of cattle
traits and
will conduct
research and
implement
new
technology
for use
through out
the beef
industry.
While the
American
Angus
Association
is the
world’s
largest beef
cattle
registry,
Angus
influence in
other beef
breeds is
reportedly
as high as
50%. A
genetic
evaluation
process
using the
AAA database
will provide
the beef
industry
with more
reliable
genetic
information.
We
appreciate
Mr. Bowman’s
visit and
his
comments. He
stayed for
the sale on
Saturday and
visited and
talked with
many of the
cattle
producers in
attendance.
Next on the
agenda was
the
dedication
of the 2008
Association
handbook.
Jane Fowler
of Wakelon
Angus in
Zebulon was
the
recipient (click
here to read
more).
I want to
thank Jim
and Don na
McCauley and
Jane’s
daughters,
Giny and
Jill for all
their help
with the
article.
Also, the
winner of
the photo
contest was
announced;
Jo Linville
of LinCrest
Angus in
Yadkinville
was
surprised to
be called up
front and
presented a
copy of the
2008
handbook
with the
picture she
had taken on
the cover.
Her picture
of a young
calf was
chosen out
of the 37
photos
submitted.
Thank you to
everyone for
those
photos.
Rather than
auction off
the items
donated for
the Cattle
Drive
Foundation,
Joe Hampton
suggested
that we view
the cattle
and have a
silent
auction of
the items on
Saturday.
Saturday was
a beautiful
May Day with
lots of
sunshine and
warm
weather. The
sale started
promptly and
the first
items up for
sale were
embryos
donated by
Birdsell
Livestock
and Gold
Hill Angus,
with
proceeds
going to the
North
Carolina
Angus
Juniors to
help finance
their trip
to the LEAD
conference
in Montana.

Bricton Farm
for your
purchase.
