North Carolina Angus Association’s
28th Annual Spring Fever Sale
Submitted by Suzanne Brewer, Executive Secretary
The 2011 Spring Fever Sale was held on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the beautiful Upper Piedmont Research Station in Reidsville. The weather was beautiful both days, the grass was green and the cows were in perfect condition. Consignments were checked in and penned in lots by mid afternoon. Several prospective buys came by on Friday afternoon to look over the offerings.
With cattle prices up on the livestock markets, we would have been disappointed if we had not had a good sale------we were not disappointed. The 2011 sale grossed almost $45,000.00 over the 2010 sale and we had basically the same number of lots. A good day for our consignors, our buyers and our Association!
Our Juniors had several cakes to auction off for their benefit and the flowers that were used as ring decorations were auctioned off also. Holshouser Farms donated a pottery wine holder as another auction item; it was engraved with the “cow nosing the calf”, American Angus Association clip art.
The Scarlett Family of Snow Camp had donated an open heifer with the proceeds to be split with 75% going to the North Carolina Angus Association and 25% going to the North Carolina Junior Angus. Twin Valley Precision E161 sired the heifer and the dam was a Bon View New Design 878 daughter. The heifer qualified as a NC Elite Angus Heifer for the sale and was purchased by Brent Scarlett, Asheboro for $2,600.00.
There were seven heifers that qualified for the NC Elite Angus Heifer program. This is the first sale where the elite heifers could be purchased, qualifying under a new program sponsored by our Association; Angus heifers must be between six and twenty-four months of age, pass a pre-breeding evaluation, be up-to-date on vaccinations, meet weight and body condition requirements, have AHIR data on hand, be A-I sired and if bred, be A-I bred and be verified pregnant via ultra sound. They were identified on checked in and tagged with a red ear tag with the NC Elite Angus Heifer logo. These seven heifers (two open and five bred) brought $17,350.00 and averaged $2,478.57. Lot 39 consigned by Highlands Farm, Morganton was the top selling lot, being purchased by Brent Scarlett, Asheboro for $3,550.00. SS Objective T510 OT26 sired her and Twin Valley Precision E161 sired her dam. She is due in September to SAV Bismark 5682. Lot 46 was consigned by Wood Angus, Willow Spring and was purchased by John Garrett, Troy, SC for $3,300.00; this open March 2010 heifer was sired by SAV Net Worth 4200 and her dam was a Bon View New Design 1407 daughter.
We sold 23 lots of cow/calf pairs for $73,700.00, averaging $3.204.35. Wood Angus, Willow Spring consigned the top selling lot, which was purchased by John Garrett, Troy, SC; lot 47 & 47A sold for $6,000.00. Lot 47 was a SAV Trailblazer 3015 daughter and SAF Bandon 5175 sired her dam. She sold with a SAV Iron Mountain 8066 heifer calf born in February. She sold open and ready to flush.
Scarlett Farms, Snow Camp consigned lot 10, 10A and 10B; lot 10 was a B/R New Frontier 095 daughter, her sire was a GDAR Traveler 71 grandson; she is due to calve in October to SCP Total V309. Lot 10A was her October, 2010 bull calf sired by TC Total 410, he was purchased by Gordon Brothers Farms, Kings Mountain for $1,000.00. Several other cow/calf pairs brought over $3,000.00 per lot.
